How to Find Wallets Made in the USA

From expensive designer wallets to cheap pleather wallets, there’s a wide range of wallets across quality and price. However, if you’re looking for a good quality wallet that will last you years, you should look specifically for a wallet made in the USA. Unfortunately, with most production taking place abroad, it can be challenging to find an authentic American-made wallet. Here’s how we found them and some shopping tips if you’re doing some of your own research.

What Does “Made in the USA” Mean?

First, let’s define what it means for something to be “made in the USA.” According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), “all or virtually all” of the product must be made in the United States. This means everything from the sourcing of the raw materials to the manufacturing of the product must take place in the USA.

To learn more about this, look at our “made in the USA” shopping and labeling deep dive.

Let’s move on to material sourcing specifically for wallets and how the US stacks up.

Materials

Most wallets are made of one of two materials: leather and cotton. To find wallets made in the USA, you must research the raw material used.

Leather

Leather quality varies immensely. For a quality leather wallet, you should look specifically for full-grain leather made from cowhide – this will last you the longest. If that’s a little out of your budget, the next step down would be top-grain leather, which is still good quality leather but may be altered slightly. Whatever type of leather you choose, you should try to avoid genuine leather, as this is an umbrella term for anything that is technically leather and doesn’t even have to be cowhide.

China is the world’s largest leather producer, but the United States also has a substantial leather industry. Plus, leather made in the USA will be of higher quality, especially if you’re after full-grain or top-grain leather.

Cotton

Cotton is another popular material used in wallets. Thankfully, cotton is a material that is easily sourced in the United States. Cotton is a 21 billion-dollar industry in the United States, so finding American-grown and American-produced cotton shouldn’t be difficult. China still tops the list as the number one cotton-producer, but the USA doesn’t lag too far behind. Just make sure to double-check where the cotton is grown if you’re after a cotton wallet.

Labeling

The labels you can find on wallets or the packaging also help us find American-made wallets. Title 19 Chapter 4 Section 1304 of the United States Code states that any product manufactured overseas must be labeled as such. So, if you’re looking for an American-made wallet, you should look specifically for the “made in the USA” label.

The FTC’s job is to police the usage of this label. However, unfortunately, there is no pre-approval process, and it is up to the companies to determine whether or not their products meet the criteria. So, ultimately, it is up to the consumers to watch out for any false “made in the USA” claims and to report them to the FTC.

Other companies may try to use tricky words and phrases to trick customers. An example is “made” versus “assembled” in the USA. When the verb “assembled” is used, it signifies that the product is not made in the USA but is instead shipped over and merely assembled here. The label “made in America” is also something to watch out for, as it can mean that the product could be made in Canada or Mexico as well.

Another thing to look out for is the American flag sticker. Just because a product has an American flag sticker on the label does not automatically mean that it is made in the United States. The flag sticker is not government-regulated, so it’s not the best way to determine whether or not a particular wallet is American-made.

Other Tips

Here are some additional tips to keep in mind when looking for wallets made in the USA.

Check out the Company’s Website

A wallet made in the USA is a huge selling point, so if a wallet is genuinely made here, you’ll usually find this fact loudly advertised on the company’s website or promotional materials. It is not required for companies to properly label their products with the country of origin online or in their marketing materials. So, when perusing the company’s website, look at everything with a critical eye. If a company does not explicitly state that its product is “made in the USA,” it is likely to be made elsewhere.

Call the Company

If you’re still unsure where a wallet is made, simply call the company. A customer service representative should be able to help answer your question about where the wallet is sourced and assembled.

Wallets Not Made in the USA

When doing our research, we found some popular wallet brands that are not made in the USA. We’ll continue to update this list as we find more.

  • Fossil – Based in Texas, but manufactures its bags and wallets in China.
  • Ridge Wallets – Their products are manufactured in Shenzhen, China.
  • Bellroy – Manufactured in China, India, and the Philippines.
  • Herschel Supply Co – Based in Vancouver, but manufactures across 15 factories in China.
