Best Activewear

Finding good workout clothes can be really tough these days and with so many brands to choose from, how do you know you’re getting the best quality? It’s even tougher when you try to find activewear that is made in the USA, so that is what we set out to do. We researched over 60 activewear brands to find which ones are actually made in the USA and manufacturing some great clothing. Below are our findings and all the criteria that went into our research.

Our Findings

Overall, we found 7 American made brands that we think are making some of the highest quality workout clothing. This clothing category is definitely one of the most outsourced to overseas manufacturers, so we threw out a ton of brands that were not making their clothes here or we feel like didn’t meet our quality criteria. A few of top picks have several types of clothes, like GORUCK and Yoga Democracy, so you’ll see them appear a few times in our list, which is organized by category to hopefully make it easier for you to scan. Let’s get to it!

Moving onto leggings, we are sticking with GORUCK. If you want a pair of leggings that you can wear around every day and put through the throws of any workout, you have to check out the Indestructible Tough Leggings from GORUCK. They put these leggings through the ringer in their testing and their ToughFlex fabric lives up to its name. They are high waisted and “squat proof” (not see-through) so you don’t have to worry about any of that and these leggings have pretty minimal seams. All in all, very comfortable and super durable. If you lift, these are not going to pill against rough surfaces like a barbell.

Their tank tops in particular are a great option – their Impossible Rib Rank is shown here. It’s made from 100% GMO-free organic cotton and long enough to cover your mid-section or tuck into some high waisted bottoms. Groceries Apparel makes a lot more activewear as well, but their tank top selection in particular is pretty great.

All of their tops are designed by actual yoga teachers and everything is made from a sustainable organic cotton with some spandex as well to help with stretch. All of their items have a backstory too about the yoga teacher that designed the piece, which is pretty cool. Even if you’re not into yoga, definitely give Hyde a look for their tops.

Similar to a lot of their other workout clothes, this GORUCK shirt won’t pill when it rubs up against a barbell or other workout equipment. It is also very lightweight and stretchy. One other great thing about GORUCK – they donate 1% of their entire top line revenue to a variety of charities that support military, veterans, first responders, teachers, and other amazing Americans that serve our country.

They have a few different windbreaker styles, but we’ve listed our two favorites below for both men and women.

American Giant – Best Sweats for Men and Women

American Giant is one of our favorite jean manufacturers in the USA and they also make great sweatshirts and sweatpants to bookend your workouts. They have everything from joggers to sweatshorts, traditional sweatpants, hoodies (pull over and zip up), crew sweatshirts, and a lot more. A lot of their sweats are made from cotton that is knit in Clover, South Carolina and the rest of the manufacturing process happens in nearby Middlesex, North Carolina. Factors We Considered

Materials

There are a lot of different materials out there that companies can use for activewear. Generally, a cotton blend with spandex, polyester, and some other synthetic materials is going to be your best bet for most activewear. Cotton has been proven to be more odor absorbent than pure polyester and bacteria also grows quicker on synthetic fabrics. You’ll also see nylon in a lot of workout clothes, which is stretchy, breathable, resistant to mildew, and dries very quickly. Polypropylene is also popular for its water resistant properties. For more eco-friendly brands, recycled plastics is also popular and a good option for a lot of people.

Stitching and Durability

We took a hard look at the durability for each of the activewear brands we considered in our research. Nothing is worse than your pair of leggings or your t-shirt coming apart at the seams after just a few wears.

Additionally, when you’re working out, you might be using some equipment that rubs up against your body. We looked for clothing that is abrasion resistant and can withstand the wear and tear of a hard workout, hike, or other activity.

Breathability

Breathability is really important when you are pouring sweat. You need to be able to cool yourself off and a thick material that just traps all that heat is no good. So, we looked for clothing that has good breathability ratings (generally the more grams the better). We also considered how waterproof each product is, which is at odds with breathability (the more breathable something is, the less waterproof it is).

Size and Fit

Everyone has different requirements when it comes to size and fit, so we looked for brands that have a lot of options for people of all sizes. When it comes to fit, we looked for workout clothes that are going to stay put when you’re moving around, so you’re not constantly having to readjust your clothing in the middle of your workout. For women especially, we also made sure that all of our top picks had good neckline options that can cover up and that any bottoms are “squat proof” and you can’t see through them.

Comfort

Of course, comfort level is very important when considering activewear. You are going to be wearing these clothes a lot, so you want them to feel good! This factor is especially important when looking at dry-fit clothes, which can be known for chaffing if they are made from a cheap material.

Price

Of course, we want to make sure you are getting the best bang for your buck, so we considered price and value for every single brand and product that we researched. We threw out a lot of overpriced activewear brands where we felt like their quality didn’t match up.
