Best Beard Care Products

Finding high quality beard care products without the scary ingredients labels can be a daunting task. When I first started looking for products to help with my beard, I quickly found a lot of “popular” choices that simply weren’t going to cut it for me. Whether you are searching for beard oils, butters, conditioners, or some other beard care product, we did the research to help you find the best beard products that are made right here in the USA. Below are all of our findings, top picks, and all the factors that went into our research.

Our Findings

Overall, we found 6 brands that we feel like are making the highest quality beard care products in the USA. While not all of their active ingredients are sourced domestically (it’s hard to find some good oils in the USA), the majority of their ingredients are sourced in the USA and all of their manufacturing is local. Since there are a lot of different types of beard care products to choose from, we separated out our top picks into oils, balms, butters, conditioners, soaps, and other popular categories to help you easily find whatever you’re looking for. Ready? Let’s dive into our top picks.

Recommendations: Going Deeper

Below are all the deeper details for each of our top picks, including what we liked and didn’t like about each one and where to get them.

Best Beard Jelly

Bossman Brands Jelly Beard Oil

Bossman Brands has some pretty innovative beard products and their jelly oil is what started it all. Stephen Condon founded the company after he couldn’t find a beard oil thick enough to hydrate his beard, so he created the first jelly oil. The thicker viscosity of the jelly texture gets deeper into your beard and sticks around for longer, so your beard stays hydrated all day long. This jelly oil is made from all natural ingredients like beeswax, avocado oil, and soybean oil that are also very rich in key nutrients to keep your beard looking good. The Bossman Brands jelly oil comes in 6 scents so you should be able to find one that suits your style. I personally like the Stagecoach scent (pictured here) which has a tobacco, leather, and bourbon smell.

Things we don’t like:

  • Some of their accessories are not made in the USA, so be wary of the big kits

Best Traditional Beard Oil

Live Bearded Wingman Beard Oil

Live Bearded’s mission is to “help beardsmen look and feel their best” and we think their great lineup of beard oils, butters, conditioners, and other beard care products does just that. The company was started by two best friends (Spence and Mink) and they really put a lot of care into their products and their community. We really like their Wingman beard oil in particular. It has a citrus, clove and vanilla smell and performs really well. It really helped relieve itchiness in my beard and made is super soft without much of a greasy feeling. Their formula is also designed to promote healthy beard growth and repair dry or damaged hair. Live Bearded has a bunch of different scents, so if the Wingman scent isn’t your thing, they have plenty to choose from.

Best Affordable Beard Oil

Honest Amish Classic Beard Oil

Honest Amish is a great choice if you’re looking for a beard oil that is organic with ingredients you’ve heard of and comes at an affordable price. This company is a small shop out of western Pennsylvania and they have an maniacal focus on making original recipes from scratch with just a few all natural ingredients. Their classic beard oil is our favorite because of that simplicity and its effectiveness. Pumpkin seed oil, avocado oil, and almond oil are a few of the primary ingredients, all of which provide great minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants to keep your beard healthy. The price point isn’t bad either – a 2 ounce bottle is a few dollars cheaper than any other option on our list.

Best Beard Conditioner and Beard Butter

Live Bearded American Conditioner and Butter

Live Bearded is back again, this time with their beard butter and beard conditioner, two products that can help you deeply moisturize your beard, the skin underneath, and provide a much fuller appearance. I got the Live Bearded complete package (pictured here) and really liked how my beard felt after applying the butter – it was softer, easier to style, and the butter absorbed well. I can definitely say that my beard felt and looked better using the Live Bearded 4-step package (wash, conditioner, oil, butter) for a few weeks. I tried the Wingman too, but I personally liked the American scent which has cedar, vetiver, and bergamot in it and a very woodsy smell. If you don’t like scents though, Live Bearded also has an unscented version of the same butter and conditioner. Live Bearded also just released a bar soap in similar scents.

Best Beard Oil and Balm Combo

MEAN Beard Co. Cannonball Beard Oil & Beard Balm Combo

MEAN Beard Co. was started by Barry Stock, a guitarist with the band Three Days Grace, and definitely makes some “mean” beard care products. I like their beard oil and balm combo kit in particular which I think is a good value for all the products you’re getting. You can choose from a “light gauge” or “heavy gauge” which is basically how much hold you need in your beard. I have the Cannonball scent pictured here which is a blend of rum, black pepper, and coconut smells, but if you don’t like the pirate vibes they have plenty of other options to choose from. As a kicker, each kit comes with a MEAN guitar pick too.

Best Scented Beard Oil

The Bearded Bastard Man of the Woods Beard Oil

The Man of the Woods Beard Oil from The Bearded Bastard was the best scented beard oil that I tried. I really like the deep woods scent of this product, although I realize that smell may not be for everyone. It gives off a rich blend of familiar smells: cedar wood, pine needles, sandalwood, and vanilla. The Bearded Bastard oils are hand made at their facility in Austin, Texas and most of them come with a pretty neat wood label. The primary ingredients are grapeseed oil, sweet almond oil, argan oil, and jojoba oil, among others. When I applied it, this oil made my beard really soft and my skin felt great as well. That seems to be the same sentiment for just about everyone who gets this beard oil from The Bearded Bastard.

Best Mustache Growth Kit

Beard and Company Mustache Growth Kit

If you need some help with your mustache, this mustache growth kit from Beard and Company is a great choice. The gift set comes with a growth balm and a growth oil that deeply moisturizes your mustache and encourages thick hair growth. It includes vitamin A, C, E and various essential oils and other nutrients that will help promote a healthy and thick mustache and also protect your facial hair from damage. This mustache kit is also a good option for men with sensitive skin. These products are pretty lightweight too, so you aren’t going to feel that lingering greasy feeling after applying.

Best Bar Soap

Bossman Brands Exfoliating Beard, Hair & Body Bar Soap

And we finish this list where we started, with Bossman Brands. In addition to their jelly oil, we really like their bar soap, which is great for exfoliating and nourishing not only your beard, but your hair and body as well. What makes this bar of soap unique is that it has zero foaming agents – a common culprit in other soaps that strip and dry out your hair and skin. This soap also helps with skin irritations like acne, dandruff, psoriasis, and eczema. Its made from all natural ingredients like oats, shea, cocoa, and coconut. Overall, I felt super refreshed after using it and think you will too.

Factors We Considered

Ingredients

The ingredients are the main factor you need to consider when selecting a beard oil, because there are a lot of oils and other ingredients that manufacturers can include and some are more beneficial than others.

Beard oils can be broken down into two main groups of ingredients.

Carrier Oils

Carrier oils are the main active ingredient in beard oils and should be all-natural oils that come from seeds and nuts. They offer the primary benefits of beard oil like softness, rich nutrients, and moisture. Most common carrier oils like sunflower or grapeseed oil can be used as a standalone beard oil. Here are some common carrier oils, not all of which can be sourced in the U.S. unfortunately.

  • Argan oil
  • Castor oil
  • Coconut oil
  • Grapeseed oil
  • Jojoba oil
  • Olive oil
  • Sunflower seed oil
  • Sweet almond oil

Essential Oils

Essential oils accent your carrier oils and are highly potent. They help fight flaky skin, acne, and provide a lot of the scent of a beard oil. Since they are highly potent, they can’t be used as a standalone beard oil, they have to be mixed with carrier oils to dilute them. Oils like lavender and sandalwood are examples of essential oils.

Ingredients to Avoid

Here are some ingredients to watch out for when you’re searching for a beard oil or other beard care product.

  • Aluminum
  • Parabens
  • Propylene glycol (PG)
  • Phthalates
  • Silicones
  • Siloxanes
  • Sulfates
  • Synthetic fragrances
  • Urea

Staying Power

A beard oil or balm that doesn’t “stay” is really frustrated. You apply it in the morning and it’s gone by lunchtime. We made sure that each of our top picks have staying power and can last you throughout the day.

Hair and Skin Health

The ingredients largely determine how healthy the beard care product is going to be for your hair and skin. We scoured through ingredients lists, tested products ourselves, looked at reviews for thousands of other customers, and consulted a few outside experts to make sure that each of our recommendations are promoting healthy hair growth and skin health.

Easy to Apply

Your beard oil, conditioner, butter, or other beard care products should be easy to apply. They also shouldn’t leave behind that goopy, greasy feeling either that makes you want to wash it out immediately.

Beard Growth Stage

Different beards need different products. That’s why we wanted to include a range of beard care products that can work for several beard stages. No matter if you’re in stubble stage, medium stage, or full stage, one of our top picks should have something for you.

Value

Of course, we want to make sure you are getting the best beard care for your money. We eliminated several brands where we felt like the quality (or amount) of product you were getting didn’t live up to the price.
