Best Cat Food

Feeding your cat high quality food is one of the most important things you can do for its health. Good food will give your pet the necessary protein and vitamins to live a healthy life, and will help prevent health issues in the future as well. Making sure you know where the ingredients in their food comes from is an important part of that. We did the research to find the brands that are producing the best cat food in the USA. Below are our findings along with all of the factors we considered in our research.

Our Findings

During our research, we took the time to track down foods with high quality ingredients and optimal flavor, and we separated them into a few different categories. We broke down the food into dry food, wet food, cat food for kittens and senior cats and also the best quality salmon formula food on the market today. To highlight a few of the standouts, we were really impressed with the quality of the Taste of the Wild cat food, because it was one of the highest protein items that we looked at. We also really liked the EVO product because of its focus on a more natural diet that’s something more similar to what cats would eat out in the wild. Read more about our recommendations below!

Best Overall Dry Cat Food

Taste of the Wild Rocky Mountain Feline Recipe

Taste of the Wild is known for producing high quality cat food, and we were particularly impressed with the Rocky Mountain Feline recipe. This food is rich with protein and other healthy additives like antioxidants, taurine, probiotics, and more. During our research, we noticed that cats really seem to love this food, and we expect that has something to do with the protein source used for it. There is 42% protein in the blend of food, and that protein comes mostly from salmon, venison, and chicken for a meaty flavor. We were happy to see that this food is grain-free, and it makes use of just enough vegetables, fruits and legumes to get a good blend of antioxidants into it. Overall, this dry cat food is very high quality, and we would be very comfortable feeding it to our furry friends at home.

Factors We Considered

Protein Quality

The first thing that we looked at when verifying that any cat food is high quality is the protein that’s used to create it. To do this, we looked at the label for two things: the minimum amount of protein, and try to find products with 30% or greater minimum crude protein. We also looked to see that the products list the protein sources high up in their ingredients list. The quality products say things like chicken, turkey, salmon, chicken meal and turkey meal, and low-quality options say things like meat or meat byproduct instead of listing the actual sources. Meat should always be the number one ingredient for cat and dog food.

AAFCO Compliance

AAFCO, or the Association of American Feed Control Officials, works to help create ingredients standards for cat food manufacturers. When evaluating different cat food options, we always look for the AAFCO seal. This lets us know that the food meets at least the minimum nutritional requirements. Of course, we wanted our top picks to go beyond the minimum standards, so we really dove deep into the ingredients list and looked for a bunch of items that help improve feline health.

Added Taurine

Even though high quality cat food should theoretically have enough taurine in it to keep your cat in good health, you can also search for included taurine when evaluating a cat food brand. Food that has at least 28% protein content should have enough taurine to keep your feline in good health, but by choosing brands with added taurine we can make sure that your cat always has enough. It’s not a danger to your cat to get some additional taurine. Cats only absorb what they need and the rest is excreted, so it’s a good practice to choose brands that include taurine so you know for sure your cat isn’t going to develop a deficiency over time.

Vitamin Content

When evaluating the different cat food options we always look closely at the vitamin and mineral content of the food itself. The best food products have a good mix of vitamins and minerals and they contain the essential vitamins such as A, B, C, folic acid, and vitamin B12.

Flavor

We also considered the flavor of every bag of cat food, or at least whether or not our testers seem to enjoy the food and that customer reviews were excellent. During the testing phase, we fed each of the different food products to cats and see how they like them. It’s easy to see whether the food has good flavor or not by how the cats react. It takes more time to test in this way, but it’s worth the effort to make sure that food is top quality.
