Best Classic White Dinnerware

HF Coors American White Dinnerware

HF Coors has been making ceramic dinnerware in the U.S. since 1925, and moved from their original site in Inglewood, California, to Tucson, where they now manufacture, in 2003. “We recognize the value to restaurants and consumers of having a product that is made in the USA,” said HF Coors President Dirck Schou. He loves that they can work so closely with their suppliers and trust that they are putting the highest quality materials and effort into their products. Their American white dinnerware stood out from the competition primarily because of its durability. This line of bowls, plates, platters, and other items are commercial quality and extremely chip resistant – fit for any restaurant or your dining room table. It’s “the same strength dinnerware that we supply to restaurants nationwide,” said Schou – a quality that he says consumers love about them most. Each piece is vitrified (impermeable to water), lead free, and cadmium free – passing FDA standards with flying colors. We love the simple classic style of this lineup for everyday use. Additionally, this dinnerware set is safe for dishwashers, freezers, microwaves, ovens, and even broilers! Their temperature limit is quite impressive. This is an all around high quality set that will be perfect on your table.

Best Fine China

Lenox Eternal Gold-Banded Fine China, 5-Piece Set

Lenox is second to none when it comes to American manufacturers of high quality fine china – they’ve been doing it for over 125 years and are currently based in Bristol, PA. This specific Lenox Eternal ivory set is banded in 24-karat gold – a style that transcends time (the name “Eternal” is a perfect fit), great for a new bride and groom or addition to your own cabinet. This set comes in 5 pieces: a dinner plate, salad plate, bread and butter plate, teacup, and saucer. It’s covered by Lenox’s lifetime replacement policy and you can even order matching pieces for serving utensils and other accessories. Lenox claims that these pieces are dishwasher safe, however, we don’t recommend putting them in the dishwasher because of the small possibility that the gold bands fade over several washes. Wash by hand and they will last a lifetime! Overall, this Lenox Eternal set is a classic, elegant fine china set that should have a place in just about everyone’s cabinet.

We love that Pickard gives you 37 different options for purchasing sets or individual pieces. Not only does the Cosmopolitan style come with your typical platters, cups, and bowls, but you can also pick up pieces like: sushi platters, butter plates, gravy boats, salt & pepper shakers, and a ton more. Best Dinnerware with Bulk Discounts

Bennington Potters 4-Piece Classic Dinnerware

Bennington Potters is based in Vermont and has been making stoneware pottery there for nearly 70 years. Their dinnerware pieces are particularly impressive, especially when it comes to buying in bulk – they give you a 10% discount when you buy 4 or more place settings! For most households, you’re going to buy at least 4 sets anyways, so the 10% discount is a great perk. Each set comes with 4 pieces: a dinner plate, lunch plate, medium bowl, and tankard mug. This stoneware has a wonderful matte and natural look to it no matter what color option you choose (there are 8 varieties). No two pieces are exactly the same either – each one is handmade! Best Stoneware

Rowe Pottery Works Sandstone Plates

Rowe Pottery Works started in Cambridge, Wisconsin in 1974 and has been cranking out high-quality stoneware out of their factory ever since. Each piece is handmade by local artisans who have perfected their craft over the years. The Woodland dinner plate (pictured here) is part of a nature inspired collection that we fell in love with – it brings such a cozy and welcoming feeling to the dinner table every time. The two color tones you see in the plate are actually merged together during the creation process, resulting in a really unique look. The sandstone plates are also dishwasher and microwave safe. This set from Rowe Pottery works is perfect for everyday use or holidays.

Best Glass Dinnerware

Fire & Light Dinner Plates

Fire & Light started in 1995 in Humboldt County, California as a partnership with the local recycling center. “One of the founding principles of Fire & Light was to use recycled glass collected at our local recycling center and to create jobs in our community,” says John McClurg, President at Fire & Light. More than 20 years later, Fire & Light has grown to one of the best homegrown glass companies making hand-poured colored glass tableware in a variety of styles and colors. Each piece is made by hand and you can choose from 9 different colors. Customers love the uniqueness of each piece and that they do things the old fashioned way, says McClurg. “We may be old fashioned but we still answer the phones and provide customer service with that same personal touch…People come from all over the country to take a tour of our studio and watch us make our glassware. Nine times out of ten they say the same thing …’Wow, I had no idea that much work went into every piece.'” The dinner plates also have matching salad plates and small bowls that you can order with them. Fire & Light plates are also dishwasher safe, so you don’t need to worry about the fuss of cleaning everything by hand. If you like glass dinner plates, Fire & Light is an elegant and fun choice for your home.

Update: unfortunately, Fire and Light has gone out of business. However, some of their inventory is still available for purchase, which we’ve linked to below.

Recap: Best Dinnerware Made in the USA

Factors We Considered

Style is everything when it comes to dinnerware, and everyone has their own personal preferences. We looked for products that were best in class in their category for simple style that can appeal to many different people. Our winners ranged from fine china with a simple white ivory body and gold band to stoneware with an earthy feel, which gives you a variety of options for whatever type of home you need to buy dinnerware for.

It is incredibly frustrating when you buy new plates, bowls, or other tableware (like flatware) and then find out that it chips or fades easily. We looked for manufacturers who have a meticulous eye for quality and don’t skimp on materials that help make their products more durable. However, everyone makes mistakes. We also looked for products that have an extensive warranty in the event that something unexpected happens and your dinnerware chips or breaks.

Cleaning Ability

Being dishwasher safe was a big feature that we looked for. Some dinnerware also has the tendency to flake, chip, or react to certain types of food, which can be harmful if it’s being absorbed into your food. All of our top picks are resistant to those types of reactions.

Purchasing Options

Typically when you’re buying dinnerware, it’s not just plates or bowls, or teacups that you’re looking for – you need the whole package! That’s why we liked manufacturers who had sets that are well put together and purchasing options that make it easy for you to buy the combinations of pieces that you need.

Of course, we always want to make sure you’re getting the best dinnerware for your money. That’s why we eliminated several dinnerware options where we felt the quality just didn’t live up to the price. After all, we’re consumers too!
