Recommendations: Going Deeper

Below are deeper details about each one of our top picks, including what we liked and didn’t like about each one.

Best for Small Dogs

West Paw Heyday Bed

We were impressed with the American made West Paw Heydey bed and all the features that it has to offer for smaller dogs. This bed is plush and designed for maximum comfort – it’s silky soft on top with a ribbed texture that most dogs will find appealing. We really loved the smooth bottom design of the bed and the tough structure that makes it feel like it will hold up really well over time. This bed is clearly made to avoid getting dirty and to easily slide around without picking up too much dirt and debris from the floor. It features an out-of-the-way zipper, and is just a well-made and tough dog bed that most small dogs will find appealing.

Things we don’t like:

  • Slightly pricey

Best for Large Dogs

Big Barker Orthopedic Dog Bed

For a large or extra-large dog that’s nearing or more than 100 pounds, beds don’t get much better than the products offered by Big Barker. Big Barker beds are long enough, thick enough, and tough enough to really work well for most large dogs. We were impressed with the construction and the comfort that each of these beds has to offer, and there are enough customization options to help you get exactly the type of bed you want for your pooch. You can easily get a bed with or without a headrest. The beds are also offered in 4’ and 5’ lengths depending on how long your canine is. We were impressed with the tough outer material of these beds and that that outer layer is fully machine washable. The beds are offered in multiple colors and designed to reduce pressure points and to also offer excellent insulation even when put onto cooler surfaces. Our only criticism of this oversized dog bed is that it’s lined with foam that will absorb moisture if a large amount of moisture is present. The foam interior cannot be washed, which is a potential weak point in an otherwise stellar product, but the Big Barker beds should work very well for most dog owners with large dogs.

Factors We Considered

Size Options

Dogs come in different sizes, so dog beds should as well. We liked the dog bed options that are offered in many different sizes, and tried to avoid beds that are only offered in a single size. We also focused on beds that are offered in common sizes that are perfect for a wide variety of dog breeds.

Durability

Let’s face it, dogs are hard on their beds. That’s why a bed need to be tough enough to withstand a bit of abuse. We looked for beds made from tough materials as a minimum requirement. They should be coated with a tough ballistic nylon, thick micro-suede, or tough vinyl material. After the material, we looked at the stitching quality. Good stitching should use a heavy, water resistant thread and have a tough stitching pattern applied at every edge of the product. Using tough stitching thread made from material like Kevlar is also a bonus to look out for.

Comfort

There’s no point in choosing a bed for your dog that isn’t comfortable. We test out each bed to verify that it is soft and comfortable (and so does Ella), but we also evaluate the fill used in the bed to make sure that it isn’t going to compress too much over time. The beds we choose should remain comfortable for years, and be comfortable for your dog even when placed on a hard surface.

Maintainability

High quality dog beds should be easy to maintain. At a bare minimum, we looked for dog beds with removable covers that are machine washable. We liked beds that open up to reveal the filling for the bolsters easily as well, and beds that are fully machine washable are best. Make sure to consider how the bed closes up as well – you need to make sure that the zipper or Velcro can hold up over time.
