Recommendations: Going Deeper

Below are a bunch of additional product details, what we liked, what we didn’t like, and where to get all of our top choices.

Best Dog Toy for Tough Chewers

Goughnuts Chew Toys

Our resident dog toy expert, Ella, enjoys trying to chew through her Goughnuts ring. So far – she’s (thankfully) been unsuccessful. But, that’s not stopping her from continuing to try!
The heavy ring is perfect for a large breed like Ella, but some smaller pups may not be able to easily carry it to their favorite spot.
Tough chewers and teething puppies can go through several toys pretty quickly if you don’t find the right ones. We found Goughnuts chew rings to be nearly indestructible in our research. First designed in 2006, these toys are made by real mechanical engineers. They also have a reliable guarantee behind them – if your dog chews through to the red inner ring inside, they will replace the toy for free. Goughnuts rings float as well, and make for great fetching toys.
Full lineup from Goughnuts: here.
Things we like:

  • Safety guarantee
  • Made from tough rubber material that is made to last
  • Comes in several colors
  • Affordable
  • Most dogs go crazy for them
Things we don’t like:

  • Slightly bitter taste that some dogs may not like
  • The Goughtnuts rings are pretty heavy – a small dog might struggle to carry it around

Best Water Toy for Dogs

Cycle Dog High Roller Dog Toy

The Cycle Dog High Roller toy is a great option for dogs who love to play in the water. This toy comes with a squeaker and is a little bit larger than a tennis ball. You’ll see a lot of other toys that can “float”, but are barely visible above the water’s surface – not this Ball though. It is designed to float on top of the water, and was the easiest toy to see on the water among others we looked at. The Cycle Dog High Roller is also made with Ecolast recycled material, which we found to be very durable and eco-friendly.

This toy is made from award winning Orbee-Tuff material, which is 100% recyclable and really durable. This ball has a good bounce to it, which makes it fun for dogs both inside and outside the house. It also floats on water, so you can take it with you on your next trip to the lake. Best Disc Toy for Dogs

West Paw Zogoflex Zisc

Normal frisbees get torn up by dogs in an instant, so if you want to throw a disc with your dog, you should get one that will last more than a few weeks. The West Paw Zisc was the best disc toy we found – we love it for its durability and high flying fun. In terms of material, it’s made out of a hard rubber that is BPA-and-Phthalate-free, so it’s totally safe for your dog and isn’t prone to punctures. The Zisc even floats – so you can take it with you on a day out on the lake too. It’s also dishwasher safe! This particular disc from West Paw comes in a couple of different sizes – 6.5 inches and 8.5 inches in diameter. Made of similar material, West Paw also has a great rope toy alternative called the Zogoflex Bimi that Mike’s dog Deuce really enjoys.

Things we like:

  • Tough and doesn’t puncture easily
  • Slightly flexible for those games of tug-o-war with your pup
  • Safe and FDA compliant

Things we don’t like:

  • Tough to make it fly as straight as a frisbee

Best Plush Toy for Small Dogs

West Paw Unstuffed Plush Toys

West Paw came through once again with their unstuffed plush toys, which we found to be the best on the market. If you’re looking for a plush toy for your dog, the Unstuffed Plush Toys from West Paw are some of the toys that are least susceptible to tearing. Best for small dogs, it comes with an internal squeaker that they simply can’t resist. Unstuffed is the way to go here as well – stuffed plush toys are more prone to tears, and you don’t want your dog eating the stuffing inside once they tear it open. The West Paw unstuffed toys prevent against that! This pink flamingo shown here is about 8 inches tall.

Things we like:

  • No harmful stuffing inside
  • Squeaker that dogs love
  • Great for small dogs

Best Rope Toy for Dogs

Chews on Belay

Handmade in Idaho, Chews on Belay rope toys are pretty simple – and dogs love them. It’s made out of 100% recycled climbing rope and tennis balls, both of which are completely safe for your dog to chew on. Chews on Belay rope toys are perfect for pups who love to play tug of war, and they are even good for fetching as well. The climbing rope and tennis balls are also durable if your dog is a big chewer or you have a teething puppy.

If you’re looking for a non-rope tugging toy option, West Paw makes a great tug toy called the Zogoflex that is also made in the USA. Mike’s dog Deuce has one and loves it!

Best Stationary Dog Toy

Tether Tug

Stationary dog toys are a great item to set up in the backyard that will keep your dog occupied and having fun. The Tether Tug was the best stationary toy we looked at – all you have to do is plant it in your yard, and your dog can pull in the nylon rope that is attached to an extremely flexible and durable fiberglass pole. The Tether Tug comes in a few different sizes, depending on the weight of your dog. Our recommendation is to buy one size up from your dog’s weight class, which will help ensure that the Tether Tug is really sturdy when playing with it. They even have an indoor version too (link below)!

Best Organic Dog Toy

Purrfect Play Organic Dog Balls

Some larger dog toy manufacturers can sometimes use materials that aren’t great for your dog’s health (we did extensive research to make sure all our top picks are 100% safe). Purrfect Play makes organic dog balls that are the best we’ve seen on the market. They are made out of all-natural wool and dogs love them! We found the Purrfect Play balls to be super durable, plus they are washable, which helps renew them each time. The material is very gentle on your dog’s teeth as well. The wool comes from “happy pasture raised sheep” from local farms around the Midwest, according to their website. These balls come in a few different sizes, so make sure to choose the right one according to your dog’s weight.

Factors We Considered

First and foremost, we looked for the best dog toys that are environmentally friendly and safe for your puppy to chew on! Some dog toy manufacturers will sacrifice safer materials for affordability – which is not cool. We made sure that each of the manufacturers we selected have toys that are BPA-and-Phthalate-free and safe for your dog to chew on.

A special note about rawhide: make sure to check with your vet about which rawhide pieces are okay for your dog! They can also be choking hazards, so make sure you are around when your dog is enjoying one. Be sure to check out our full guide on the best dog treats made in the USA.

After all, what good is a dog toy if it’s not fun? We mined through thousands of customer reviews to find the toys that were most enjoyable to all varieties of pups. That’s also why we had top picks for several different types of toys – every dog is different! Whether it’s a disc, ball, rope toy, or something else, dogs have different preferences.

Nothing is more frustrating than buying a new toy for your pup and having them destroy it in only a few days. Our recommendations are battle tested for all sorts of tough chewers. So much depends on the material that the toy is made out of. A lot of makers will take shortcuts in the construction process and make toys with low quality rubber or stitching. Make sure to choose the right type of toy for your dog! Super tough chewers are likely going to rip apart a plush toy faster than a rubber or rope toy.

We want to make sure that you get the best value for your money. We made sure to weed out any products where we thought the quality didn’t justify the price.
