Best Flatware

There are a ton of options out there for flatware to go with your set of dishes. We set out to find the flatware manufacturers that are making the highest quality forks, knives, spoons, and other utensils right here in the USA. We were surprised by the results of our research, which we’ve detailed below. Happy hunting for phenomenal flatware!

Our Findings

Among the over 20 different flatware companies that we looked at, only one produces all of their flatware in the U.S. – Liberty Tabletop. Liberty is the name brand of Sherrill Manufacturing, a family owned and operated business run by Matt Roberts and Greg Owens. They’ve been producing flatware in the U.S. for over 100 years right out of their factory in Sherrill, NY. Their product quality is among the best, even comparing to international manufacturers, because they take the time to make their flatware with high quality materials (18-10 chromium/nickel stainless steel) that are also sourced from the United States, and test all of their steel to ensure no toxins are present and it meets all health and safety standards. We dug into Liberty Tabletop product lines a bit more and compiled our recommendations for a variety of popular styles. Check them out below!

Recommendations: Going Deeper

Since Liberty Tabletop is the only brand we’ll be featuring here, we’ve divided out our recommendations by flatware style. Check out a breakdown of each popular style below, along with what we liked and didn’t like about each one.

Casual Style

Liberty Tabletop Annapolis

Simple, but stylish. We voted the Annapolis pattern from Liberty Tabletop the best among their casual styles for its classic teardrop shape and polished mirror finish. This style is also very versatile – it can be paired with virtually any dishes, whether it’s your casual everyday set or a more formal occasion. Just like all their other products, the Annapolis pattern is made with 18-10 stainless steel, is dishwasher safe, and made in their factory in New York.

Rimmed Style

Liberty Tabletop Classic Rim

The Classic Rim is one of the most popular styles for Liberty Tabletop, and consumers are right – this is a wonderful style, particularly in the rimmed category. It looks good on the table and feels great in your hand with wonderful balance. Similar to the Annapolis pattern, the Classic Rim pattern can be used with your everyday dinner dishes and also fit well with your finer sets. The forged knives in this set are a heavy weight with a serrated blade, about 9 inches in length. Overall, a great set if you like the rimmed style.

Contemporary Style

Liberty Tabletop Providence

The scalloped pattern on the Providence style really makes this flatware set stand out. The hammered finish is a very popular trend in modern design. The Providence pattern is perfect for everyday use or entertaining family and friends. We wouldn’t recommend it for more formal occasions, as the hammered finish doesn’t go well with many finer dish sets.

Thick Flatware

Liberty Tabletop Lexington

The Lexington pattern from Liberty Tabletop features a thicker, fuller design to each piece of flatware. It features a pillow tip technique, which adds a distinctive end cap to each handle and a rather unique design. The knives have a hollowed handle, around 9.5 inches in length. This pattern is a very modern look that Liberty recommends for any occasion, whether that is everyday use or more formal settings. The simple design pairs well with just about any set of dishes.

Steak Knives

Liberty Tabletop Steak Knives, Set for 12

These steak knives from Liberty Tabletop are incredibly high quality. Made from 18-10 chromium/nickel stainless steel, they are built for durability, stain prevention, shine, and virtual elimination of any odd tastes or other oddities that come from using a lower quality piece of flatware. Testing these out personally, we had no trouble cutting through several different types of meats and vegetables. The simple style makes them perfect for pairing with almost any dish and flatware combination. However, with the pillow tip finish on these steak knives, we recommend pairing with the Lexington pattern for the most consistency. We’ve linked to the set of 12, but there are several different set options you can choose from depending on how many steak knives you need.

Factors We Considered

Style

The best styles are largely subjective to what your preferences are. We looked for styles that are very popular among the previous buyers of these flatware products, and that go well with a wide variety of settings from casual to formal.

Durability

Durability is important when looking for your next flatware set. However, we don’t mean durability in the sense of these utensils breaking or snapping. Durability more so means rust prevention and ability to clean safely and effectively. You need flatware that is going to last you a long time, and that you don’t have to hand clean and dry every time you use them. We made sure we chose options that are made of the highest quality materials and are dishwasher safe.

Safety

Speaking of high quality materials, those also come into play when thinking about the safety of your flatware. Typically, you want to look for flatware that is made from high quality stainless steel, typically 18-10 chromium/nickel stainless steel and up. Make sure the manufacturer uses high quality materials like this, and also does extensive safety testing on all of their flatware to check for toxin or lead exposure. Everything from Liberty Tabletop goes through a rigorous QA process.

Value

Just like you, we always want to make sure we’re getting the best flatware for our money. We made sure to choose patterns that are high quality and price appropriate. After all, we’re consumers too!
