Recommendations: Going Deeper

A gun safe is a significant investment. You want to make sure that you choose a safe that is secure (from your family and unwelcome guests), durable, the right size, and has all the features you need. We’ve broken down each of our recommendations to include product details, things we like, things we didn’t like, and even some runner-ups for a couple of categories.

Most Secure Gun Safe

American Security Bf6030 Safe

Made in Fontana, California, American Security Products (AMSEC) safes set the standard when it comes to building high-quality safes made in the USA. They are a west coast based company (check out a video tour of their facility here) and make safes in all different sizes whether it’s a big standing safe, or one that fits in your wall or floor. The Bf6030 is top-of-the-line and one of the most secure models they have for your firearms. The 1/2 inch steel plate door is best-in-class compared to Liberty and other manufacturers. Dimensions: 59 X 30 X 26(H X W X D). Holds up to 27 guns.

Things we like:

  • 1/2 inch steel plate door
  • First-class fire protection, up to 1275 degrees F for 90 minutes
  • Pre-cut anchor holes for bolting to the floor
  • 2 inch filled walls on all sides with concrete-like material (more fire protection than drywall)
  • ESL electronic lock with a relocker and anti-drill plate
  • Exterior door hinges for a wider range of motion

Things we don’t like:

  • No interior lighting

Best Handgun Safe

Liberty Smart Vault Biometric Safe

The Liberty Smart Vault Biometric Safe is the best one we researched for handgun storage. After looking at multiple tests, the biometric finger swipe technology is reliable and a secure way to lock your safe. The finger swipe is also great for speed – you can access your safe in about one second, which is crucial if your family’s safety is on the line. This safe operates via a 9v battery or AC power with a plug, whichever you prefer.

Things we like:

  • Easy to program fingerprints
  • Sturdy, 14-gauge steel door
  • Mounting holes on the bottom for securing to a surface
  • Size is big enough for nearly any handgun
  • Backup key
  • 5-year warranty

Things we don’t like:

  • The auto-opening door is a little noisy (not loud, but not stealthy either)
  • The finger swipe recognition gets spotty as 9v battery life gets low (not an issue if you’re using the AC power plug)

Honorable mentions: Fort Knox Personal Pistol Safe, Liberty Handgun Quick Combo Vault

Best Entry Level Gun Safe

Liberty Safe & Security 18-Gun Safe

The Liberty Safe & Security Prod Re18-Bkt 18-Gun Safe is their entry-level model for basic protection and fire resistance. As seen in our photo, the interior can be rearranged slightly to fit your needs for storing ammo and other valuables besides your guns. No bells and whistles inside like interior lighting or fancy fabric – just the essentials. Like most other popular gun safes, this model can be bolted to the floor and fire resistance capabilities. At the current price tag, this safe is a good value. Dimensions: 22 x 25 x 60 inches. Made in Utah.

Check Price

Things we like:

  • Bolting capabilities to secure the safe to the floor
  • Fire resistance for 30 minutes at 1200 degrees F
  • Old school, reliable combination lock
  • Great value for the price

Things we don’t like:

  • Tight fit for 18 guns, be careful not to bang up your firearms
  • Uses drywall fill for safe walls instead of concrete-like material, less sturdy (but still plenty safe)

Best Wall Mount Gun Safe

V-Line Quick Vault Safe

The V-Line Quick Vault Safe is the best option we found for anyone who needs a wall safe for either ease of access or concealment. It’s designed to install between wall studs, completely flush with the wall surface, so it can be easily concealable behind other objects. It’s the sturdiest option out of all the wall safes we researched and should be just fine for storing a handgun and other small valuables (comes with a shelf inside as well). Dimensions: 4 x 12 x 14 inches. Made in Simi Valley, CA.

Check Price

Things we like:

  • Sturdy construction, 3/8″ thick steel lock block
  • Lines up flush with your wall
  • Outside frame to conceal drywall cuts for a clean, aesthetic finish
  • Five-button mechanical lock, 1081 possible combinations

Things we don’t like:

  • Only one pre-drilled option for mounting, multiple depths can be helpful to accommodate various conditions
  • Fire resistance is less so than your typical standing safe

Best Large Gun Safe

Freedom Security Big Boy by Liberty, 36-Gun Safe

Freedom Security Big Boy safes are engineered by Liberty, one of the most popular and reliable American made safe companies. The Big Boy 36 is a great safe if you need a little more room than usual and don’t want to sacrifice quality. The Big Boy safes use 12-gauge, 2-piece roll-form steel to form the body and the 1″ thick door. This safe has fire resistance for up to 30 minutes at 1200 degrees F, which is pretty standard for most standing gun safes. Overall, a really high-quality safe for bulk gun storage and security. Dimensions:  60.5″x36″x24″.

Check Price

Things we like:

  • Triple case hardened steel plates that protect the lock from a drill attack
  • Bolting capabilities to secure the safe to the floor
  • Great value for your money
  • Flexible interior with movable shelving

Things we don’t like:

  • Uses drywall fill instead of concrete material for wall filling
  • Some customers have had a bad experience with temperamental locks

Best Gun Safe for Storing Other Valuables

Champion Safe Estate Series

Champion Safe has been producing some incredibly strong safes with American-made steel since 1999. They have a lot of options to choose from, but we like their Estate Series safe in particular because it is great for storing other valuables in addition to your firearms. It has an ASTM-certified steel plate, a lot of customization options, a lot of security features, and a 75-minute fire rating at 1500F degrees. The interior also has a great organizer for storing smaller items like jewelry, documents, and other valuables. So, if you need just a high-quality home safe for more than just your guns, check out the Estate Series from Champion Safe.

Things we like:

  • Thick double plate steel door

Factors We Considered

Security and Safety

You absolutely cannot compromise on security when it comes to storing your firearms and other valuables. We looked for safes that met high UL Standards and passed multiple other quality checks for body construction/material, lock integrity, weight, drill protection, fire resistance, and more.

Floor Attachment

The floor attachment is a super important part of security. We looked for safes that are designed with this feature in mind. Get creative with how you bolt it down! This feature will help prevent a thief from hauling it out on a hand truck.

Easy to Use

We wanted to make sure we provided safe recommendations that are easy to use on a variety of fronts. One, locks on safes should be straightforward and have minimal faults. Two, interior construction should be flexible and easy to move around. And three, the setup of the safe should be easy for programming combinations & fingerprints, bolting down the safe to the floor, and getting everything else in order.

Getting the Most for Your Money

We immediately eliminated any safes that we thought were overpriced for the value they provided. Some manufacturers will skimp on certain critical safe features and over-invest in “flashy” improvements to try and justify the price. We made sure to eliminate manufacturers who did just that, whether it related to lock reliability, body construction, or something else.

Why Buy American?

American Steel vs. Chinese Steel

There are some significant quality differences between American and Chinese steel, which is a popular manufacturing choice for businesses that build their safes outside of the US. American steel typically has lower oxidation than its Chinese counterpart, which results in a stronger final product. A great example is Champion, an American safe manufacturer. Their 12-gauge steel is three times stronger than your typical 14-gauge steel that is imported from China.

Investing in Our Country

Investing in an American made gun safe means you’re investing in the American workforce and our economy. Employees at gun safe manufacturers all across our country are passionate about what they do and appreciate your support as a consumer.

Gun Safes Not Made in the USA

There are several manufacturers who don’t make their gun safes in the USA, often using imported steel or assembling their safes abroad.

  • First Alert – China
  • GunVault – China
  • Cannon Safes – Mexico
  • Sentry Industries – Andorra
  • AmazonBasics Security Safe – China

We have a full article on where Cannon safes are made as well, which is the same company that owns GunVault.
