Factors We Considered

The Features

The features of a jacket determine just how useful it’s going to be for you. When searching for rain coats we looked for waterproofing and storage features most of all. When looking at winter jackets, we focused on features connected to warmth above all else and then other factors like storage or removable layers.

Materials Used

We looked for quality materials. Weight and thickness first and foremost to verify that products are built to last, then the type of material is also important depending on the style of jacket. For leather jackets, we looked for full-grain leather instead of genuine leather (the lowest quality). For rain jackets, a heavy nylon is what we looked for.

Construction Quality

Build quality is arguably the most important consideration when looking at a jacket. Material quality and design make no difference if the jacket isn’t made well. That’s one of the advantages that we have by looking at American-made products, more of them are built with quality and strength in mind. We looked closely at the stitching of each product we reviewed, the steps to reinforce the jackets, the hardware installed, and all those other little details that make the difference between a low-quality product and a master-crafted garment. We know the value of fine craftsmanship and we always look for it in our recommended products.

Value

While we don’t search for cheap jackets, we don’t want to recommend jackets that are overpriced either. Instead, we compared features, materials, and the type of jacket to the overall price to determine whether a jacket is a good value or not. We recommended jackets that offer a lot for their cost in terms of fit, function, and style. Some of our recommendations will seem somewhat costly, but they provide a serious value that you would be hard-pressed to match for less money.

Fit

When searching for jackets, we had different concerns about the fit and size of the products depending on their purpose. We wanted to see jackets that are shaped to perform as effectively as possible for their specific task. When evaluating winter jackets, we looked for products that offer a snug fit to retain body heat, but enough space to add a sweatshirt underneath. When evaluating rain coats, we looked for a form-fitting neck and a waist that cinches shut, but also the option to add a few layers underneath for warmth on those chilly fall and spring days. We evaluated each jacket individually to verify that it’s shaped properly for its function.
