How to Find Jackets Made in the USA

Jackets are a form of personal expression. A nice jacket is a great way to express yourself. Many jackets are available in the market today; whether you are looking for a rain jacket, a stylish leather jacket, or a jean jacket, multiple options are available. If you are looking for a jacket that will last you over the years, you should not compromise on quality.

Products produced in the USA tend to be made of better quality materials and craftsmanship. On top of that, by buying American-made products, you are bolstering the country’s economy and its workers. However, where do you even begin to look when most product manufacturing nowadays happens in China or other big manufacturing hubs?

Below, we will give you some guidance and suggestions to help you decide and recognize whether these jackets are authentically made in the USA or not.

What Does “Made in the USA” Mean?

If a product is labeled as “made in the USA,” it means that all the materials required for its manufacturing and assembling should be sourced in the United States.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) states that a product should be “all or virtually all” made in the U.S. When it says “all,” it means that the assembly or making of the product and a substantial amount spent on its total manufacturing must come from the U.S. regions or should be processed in the U.S.

If you’d like to learn more about this, check out our research on finding American made products.

Materials

When looking for an American made jacket, the first thing to look at is to research the source material and where it comes from. Many materials, like polyester, wool, and cotton, are used to make jackets.

Polyester

Polyester is one of the most popular materials used to make jackets worldwide. It is highly weather-resistant, which makes it a popular material for thick snow jackets. A significant advantage of polyester is that it can be manufactured in various colors and patterns.

China towers above all other countries in polyester production, as with most other source materials. However, the USA still manufactures around 1.3 million metric tons of this material despite lagging behind several other Asian countries. Specifically, the Eastman Chemical Company and William Barnet & Son are the biggest USA-based companies in polyester production.

Wool

Wool is a natural material used to craft sturdier and more durable jackets. Wool is a fantastic natural insulator, which makes this the perfect material for a fashionable winter jacket that can also resist some moisture.

The USA is third the world’s leading wool-producing country, behind Australia and China. Within the USA, most wool comes from Texas and California. Although Australia produces around three times more wool than the United States, it is still possible to find American-made wool.

Cotton

Cotton is a soft natural fiber that feels comfortable and warm to protect against colder weather. Jackets can be 100% cotton or blended with polyester. It is a popular material used for jackets as it can be dyed into virtually any color or pattern. Denim is a cotton fabric too.

China and India are the leading cotton manufacturers, but the USA does not lag too far behind in manufacturing this raw material. The USA manufactures around 3.8 million metric tons of cotton, which is not an insignificant amount. American-made cotton should be reasonably easy to find.

Silk

Silk is the strongest natural fabric in the world, consisting of a natural protein fiber named fibroin. It produces a shimmering visual effect. Unfortunately, the USA is one of the biggest importers of silk and does not produce much silk domestically. Most of the silk in the USA comes from countries like China, India, and Uzbekistan.

Labeling

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is an organization that prevents and brings action against inequity or misleading information in the market regarding product labeling. They are very strict and have stringent guidelines that companies must follow to label a product.

Companies are required to label their products properly by stating where they are made. This labeling is usually found on the product itself or its packaging. The FTC protects the label “made in the USA,” so they can even take legal action against companies that falsely illustrate or mislead consumers by claims that their products are made in the USA.

However, the FTC does not necessarily do the best job policing the usage of the label “made in the USA.” It is up to the companies to determine whether their products are genuinely made in the USA. So, if a false “made in the USA” claim is made, it is up to each individual to report this to the FTC.

You should also make sure to read between the lines regarding labeling. Companies often use confusing words and phrases to trick consumers into thinking their products are made in the USA. For example, the phrase “made in America” can refer to a product made in Canada or Mexico rather than the United States. And verbs like “manufactured” or “designed” may be used as opposed to the all-encompassing “made.”

Other Tips

Here are some additional tips to help you find a jacket made in the USA.

Check Out the Company’s Website

A good place to start is the company’s website. Their “About Us” page or the product page on their website should contain information about whether or not their products are made in the USA. Labeling the origin country for products is not a legal requirement regarding online materials, so the silence speaks volumes in this case. If you can’t find where a product is made online, likely, that the product is not made in the USA.

If a product is truly made in the USA, this is a huge selling point and will not usually be a hidden fact.

The American Flag Does Not Mean American-Made

Just because there is an American flag sticker on the product does not necessarily mean that the product is made in the USA. Unlike the “made in the USA” label, the usage of the American flag is not protected by the FTC.

Call the Company

This may seem like an obvious solution, but call the company! After research, if you are still unsure whether or not a specific jacket is made in the USA, call customer support. They should be able to answer your questions regarding where the product is sourced and manufactured.
