How To Find Kids’ Clothes Made in The USA

As parents, when it comes to our kids, we want to ensure they are safe and well-cared for. This may mean ensuring they eat quality food, play quality games, and even wear quality clothes that won’t be scratchy or worn down after just a few wears. Unfortunately, you cannot always attest to the quality of the clothing when purchasing products made overseas. So, one way to ensure your child gets the best they deserve is to purchase American made kid’s clothes.

But with most production taking place abroad in today’s day and age, how does one find clothes made in the USA? This guide will take you through the tips and tricks to find US-made kid’s clothing.

What Does “Made in the USA” Mean?

Before we begin, let’s define what it means for something to be “made in the USA.” According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), it means the product is “all or virtually all” made in the USA. This includes everything from the sourcing of the raw materials to the actual assembly of the product.

Check out our helpful “made in the USA” guide to learn more about the FTC labeling guidelines.

Materials

The first step to finding kids’ clothes made in the USA is to check the materials used. Researching the materials can go a long way in helping you determine whether or not a particular product is made in the USA. Most kids’ clothing is made from cotton.

Cotton is the most commonly used material for kid’s clothing because it is light, breathable, and easy to clean. Currently, China and India are the world’s leading cotton producers, but the USA manufactures its fair share of cotton. The USA has a booming 21 billion-dollar cotton industry, making it the third largest cotton producer in the world. Although many companies will opt for Chinese or Indian-produced cotton to cut down on manufacturing costs, clothes made from US cotton are not too difficult to find. But since cotton can be grown and produced elsewhere, it’s definitely worth double-checking the country of origin before purchasing.

Labeling

On top of researching where the materials come from, you should pay close attention to what the label says.

The Textile Fiber Products Identification Act is a huge help for consumers looking for US-made products. This act makes it a legal requirement for all clothing companies to be transparent about the fiber contents of their products.

If you look at the label on your clothing right now, you’ll see on the label whether your clothes are made from 100% cotton or 80% cotton and 20% polyester. In addition, the country of origin of the kids’ clothing must be clearly visible on the label.

Furthermore, Title 19 Chapter 4 Section 1304 of the US Code states that all imported products must be labeled with the country of origin. These two laws are a huge help when looking for US-made kid’s clothes. Keeping all of this in mind, when looking for kids’ clothes made domestically, you should look specifically for the FTC-protected “made in the USA” label.

However, the FTC does not do a very good job of policing the use of the label “made in the USA” label, as there is no pre-approval process. Therefore, it is up to companies to determine whether or not their products meet the requirements to use the label. And ultimately, it’s up to the consumers to report any misuse of the label.

You should also watch out for the particular vocabulary used in labels. Specifically, watch out for labels that may sound similar to “made in the USA” but are not. Labels like “manufactured in the USA” or “designed in the USA” may seem similar, but they only refer to a part of the entire manufacturing process taking place in the United States. Another popular label is “made in America;” however, “America” can refer to all of North America, including Mexico and Canada.

The last thing to look out for is the American flag sticker on the label. The usage of the flag on a product’s tags is not protected, so just because you see the flag does not mean that it is made in the USA.

Other Tips

Here are some other tips for finding kid’s clothing made in the USA.

Check Out The Company’s Website

Learn more about where a company’s products are made by checking out its website. Generally, if the product is truly made in the USA, you’ll find this fact advertised on the website. In addition, you should be able to see this information on the About Us page or the product page.

On the other hand, if you can’t find any information, keep in mind that companies are not required to state the country of origin regarding online or promotional materials. So, if you can’t find the country of origin, it’s likely the product is made elsewhere.

Try Online Shopping

Online shopping sites like Amazon will often state the country of origin on the product page. Scroll down to the Product Description section and look for this information. You can also check out the FAQ page to see if someone else has already asked about the product’s country of origin.

Call The Company

If you cannot find any answers on the website, you can try calling the company directly and asking them. A representative should be able to answer your questions.
