Luggage Made in the USA (And Our Top 7 Picks)

We did a ton of research to find you the best luggage for your next trip, whether it’s through the air or on the road. Our top picks are broken down into the most popular styles that you’re likely looking for in hardside, softside, duffles, and more. We even included a couple of fun items with a great messenger bag and toiletry bag. And, of course, every product we recommend is made right here in the USA. Explore our findings below and happy traveling!

Our Findings

Overall, we found that there are several American manufacturers making great travel luggage and bags in a variety of different categories. ROAM stood out as our clear winner in the hardside suitcase category with their well-made, functional pieces that are built to last (although with one caveat we mention below). Small manufacturers like Tough Traveler, Flowfold, and others were equally impressive in carry on and duffle categories. Red Oxx offers large duffels that are durable enough to be checked when traveling by air and cinda b has a nice softside carry on for ladies. Check out more details, our research methodology, and more below.

Recommendations: Going Deeper

Take a look at the nitty gritty details for each of our recommendations. We include product specs, things we liked, things we didn’t like, and where to find these items for purchase.

Best Hardside Luggage

ROAM Luggage

ROAM is based in San Diego, California and they produce customizable hard-sided luggage, however, they use the language “handcrafted in the USA” because they only assemble their luggage here, although it is assembled by hand by American workers, some of the materials they use are imported so just know that going in if you’re interested in getting some luggage from ROAM. It was really tough to find companies that are making hard-side luggage that is 100% made in the USA with all materials sourced here, but ROAM came close so we wanted to mention them here.

Best Softside Luggage

cinda b Carry On Rolly

cinda b is making some great luggage, handbags, and other accessories all 100% in the USA out of their Fort Wayne, Indiana headquarters. We particularly like their softside roller, which is perfect to carry on or stow away if you’re traveling for a few days. It is super easy to roll and has a nice carrying handle on top for going up and down stairs or lifting into the overhead bin. The suitcase material is pretty thick, so we think it should be a durable option. It also has a neat feature that they call “Big-Mouth” – essentially a large opening on both sides of the suitcase that makes it super easy to pack and unpack. This bag is also stain resistant, has a couple of outside pockets, and some interior pockets for storing smaller items.

Best Toiletry Bag

Lifetime Leather Toiletry Bag

Lifetime Leather is a small company out of Arizona that is handmaking some amazing leather goods, including these toiletry bags. I was really impressed with the quality of this one. The bag is handmade to order from full grain leather, not the cheap stuff that wears down quickly. The zipper is water resistant and most guys can fit all of their toiletries in here for vacations or business travel. It comes in two sizes, but the standard size should be good for most people. I also really like the personalization. You can embroider initials on the side of the bag and even include a personalized message on the inside liner! This is truly a bag that you can own for a lifetime.

Red Oxx Sherpa Jr. Expedition Series

Red Oxx lives and breathes American made. Designed and hancrafted in Billings, Montana, their Sherpa series bag is a dream for any expedition outfitter. The bag comes with Red Oxx’s “No Bull” lifetime warranty, which is great if anything ever happens to your bag. We were really impressed with the durability of this Sherpa Series bag. Factors We Considered

Your suitcase has to be durable. If you’re flying somewhere, your bags are changing hands several times and can incur a lot of wear and tear. We eliminated over 20 bags from our consideration based on their lack of durability (easy to tear, dent, etc.), and only made recommendations for products we feel confident can last you for years to come.

Easy to Use

What’s a good piece of luggage if it isn’t functional? Zippers getting stuck, pockets in inconvenient places, dysfunctional wheels – you know the deal. Below are some of the functional criteria we looked for in each of our categories.

  • Handle/strap functionality and comfort
  • Wheel mobility and stability
  • Easy slide zippers
  • Convenient pocket locations
  • Easy access to your belongings

We looked for products that were fairly represented in price and quality. We want to make sure you’re getting the best luggage for your money, whatever type of bag it may be. We eliminated any suitcases or bags that we thought were unfairly priced based on the quality.
