Recommendations: Going Deeper

Below we dig into our top tie selections and why each stands out on the list.

Best Cotton Bow Ties

Mo’s Bows

Mo’s Bows are beautiful handmade bow ties constructed from rugged cotton and gingham. These bow ties are offered in dozens of different patterns and styles and are known for their high quality construction and for their intriguing story. The American-based company was founded by 12-year old Moziah Bridges who was featured on Shark Tank. We had the pleasure of speaking with Tramica Morris, Mo’s mother, who spoke about their close ties to American manufacturing. “We started our family business 8 years ago in Memphis, TN. There is something near and dear to us about the south. We want to maintain the integrity and authenticity of our bow ties, so we choose to manufacture right here in Tennessee,” says Morris.

Each bow tie features a metal slide adjuster as well as a hook and clip for fastening. They are adjustable and will fit multiple neck sizes well. We like the story behind the bow ties, but also the look and durability of them. The best part is that some of the proceeds from sales of Mo’s Bows go to Moziah’s charity, Go Mo, which pays for Memphis-based children to go to summer camp.

Best Black Bow Tie

PSC (Pocket Square Clothing) Briggs Style

The Briggs Bow Tie from PSC is an impressive and stylish accessory that helps add a professional look to a crisp white dress shirt. We were impressed with the clean look of the bow tie and its classic look. Each tie is made from rayon wool and really durable. These bow ties are self-tying and in the Diamond point formation for a particularly stand-out look. The only downside to these bowties is that they are dry-clean only, making them a bit more difficult to maintain. These adjustable ties fit most and they are handcrafted in the USA.

No dyes are used during the crafting process and bow ties take about five hours to create. These ties are soft, highly adjustable, and easy to put on. They fit most neck sizes, stretching between 11” and 20” in circumference. Each tie is self-tying (obviously) and features hooks for easy attachment. Best Wooden Bow Ties

Ella Bing

Ella Bing goes way out of the box with their bow ties, making them from natural wood instead of traditional cotton or silk. These ties look stately and offer a natural glow that stands out in a different way than most other cloth ties can. We had the pleasure of talking with the owner of Ella Bing, Brent Kraus, who told us his dad actually makes each piece by hand! We love the unique look of the exotic wood ties mixed with the fabric wraps to create the finished product. These ties are costly, but they’re a lovely fashion accessory that you’ll enjoy showing off. The only downside to these bow ties is that they attach with somewhat unreliable Velcro instead of standard hooks, but it’s still pretty sturdy. “People tell us they love our wooden bow ties because each one is 100% unique, and it’s like wearing a conversation piece around their necks,” says Brent. We couldn’t agree more!

There are blues, reds, blacks and any other colors, depicting airplanes, space ships and other symbols from history and wars in particular. Best Modern Neckties

Ole Mason Jar

Ole Mason Jar is a standout necktie company when you’re searching for a modern look. Their ties are right in the middle in terms of width (3″, not skinny or large), they go with pretty much any body type, and you have a large selection to work with at Ole Mason Jar. Each tie is handcrafted in North Carolina using quality wool or cotton material. They’re easy to tie, fit pretty well in place, and they are well stitched. We love the many different print options available from the company, but wish there were a few different thicknesses to choose from. These neck ties are also a bit more expensive than similar quality ties.

We also spoke with CEO and Co-Founder Brad Rhyne over email, who had this to say about their dedication to American manufacturing: “We were born and raised in North Carolina, a state once so rich in textiles and manufacturing, so has always been a passion for us to try and produce all that we can right here in our backyard. To help revitalize not only American manufacturing, but North Carolina manufacturing is a mission we have been dedicated since starting OLE MASON JAR in 2013.” When we asked him about what their customers love most about their ties and other products, he mentioned their dedication to making more than just great products. “It is an experience and a story of how each garment is handmade by second and third generation seamstresses that sets us apart,” says Rhyne. We love that!

They are all offered in the standard 57” form-factor, which means they should fit most people well. We like their attention to detail on each of these ties and the hand-stitched loops and bar tacks. The labels are all hand-sewn and each tie is clearly designed to last and be a work of art. With so many different patterns to choose from, the most frustrating part about Gitman ties is choosing just one to get!

Their ties are formed from a durable cotton material, and cut and stitched with precision. They are also a bit easier to maintain than standard silk ties are, and can be lightly ironed back into a nice flat position when the need arises.

Recap: Best Ties Made in the USA

Factors We Considered

Material

No matter if we’re looking at silk ties, cotton, or a blend of different materials, we’re looking to verify the material is durable, it’s stain resistant, and it will hold its shape well over time. We put each tie through several tests to make sure it’s elastic and durable at the same time. We also bent, twisted, and knotted each one to see how well they hold up and if they avoid fraying. Only ties made from the best materials made our list.

The Feel

The feel is a great way to judge the quality of a tie. Thin, lightweight ties typically mean that the manufacturer skimped on materials. Make sure the tie feels substantial with thick material and good stitching.

Attention to Detail

When evaluating ties, we paid close attention to all the little details, because they are clues that uncover whether a tie is a quality product or not. Ties that are meticulously stitched, that have a loose slip stitch and that are carefully reinforced in all the right places are high quality ties. They should also have a sturdy bar tack on their underside. Low quality ties normally suffer from poor stitching, inflexible slip stiches, a missing bar tack, and other slight issues that lead to less durability overall.

Precision Cut

The very best ties are put together using a bias cut, or material cut along a 45 degree angle across the grain of the material. This helps the tie bend and flex more reliably, and it’s one of the first details lost in a low quality tie. We looked for this bias cut on every tie we recommended.

Patterns and Style

Finding the right look for every occasion might seem daunting, but with many of the companies we’re recommending, there are dozens of different color and pattern combinations to choose from. Hopefully it’s pretty easy to find a look that will match your style with so many different options to choose from.
