The Signature Kentfield Estate all-purpose wine glasses enhance the aromas and flavors of any wine in a classic, functional design. It’s no surprise that this product receives continuous accolades for those familiar with Libbey’s history as a premier American glassware manufacturer.

About Libbey

William Libbey founded the New England Glass Company East Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1818. Libbey’s son, Edward, joined the company in 1874 and ultimately gained full control of it in 1880. Edward Drummond Libbey brought in Michael Owens as a member of the board. Less than a decade later, Edward Drummond Libbey moved the company to Toledo, Ohio.

Shortly after the transition to Toledo, the company underwent a name change and became The Libbey Glass Company. Under the new name, the company evolved rapidly and became the first to accomplish many feats.

  • In 1904, Libbey became the first glass manufacturer to produce electric light bulbs automatically.
  • Three years later, the company developed the first machine-blown glass tumblers in the industry.
  • 1970 brought Libbey into the spotlight once more, and earned a patent, with the creation of one-piece press and blow stemware.
  • Five years later, Libbey introduced the world’s largest machine-made stemware.
  • In 1989, Libbey created a new process known as marbelique glassware.
  • By the mid-1990s, the company moved into new technology with two more firsts. Libbey introduced a blowing machine controlled by computers and a computer simulation for the tableware industry about hot glass forming processes.

The Libbey Glass Company showed a remarkable talent for evolving to adapt to the rapid changes within the industry. A series of partnerships and acquisitions strengthened the company’s position within the tableware industry.

Over the years, Libbey partnered with Syracuse China and Royal Leerdam. They acquired World Tableware in 1997 and Crisal in 2005. Each move expanded Libbey’s offerings in America and around the globe. Today, Libbey lists a dozen different names under their family of brands.

Despite the worldwide expansion, The Libbey Glass Company remains intertwined with the city of Toledo. In fact, Toledo is known as “The Glass City” and is home to a high school and museum named after Libbey Glass. You can still purchase a wide selection of glassware and souvenirs at the retail outlet in Toledo.

The Libbey Glass Company is America’s top glass manufacturer, but it’s also one of the world’s largest tableware suppliers. For more than two centuries, the company has produced quality glassware and set the bar for the entire industry.

What We Wish was Different

  • Packaging is subpar
  • Some quality control issues

Though the vast majority of reviews indicate no issues with shipping or durability, there are some frustrations about packaging and quality control. Indeed, no company or product is perfect, and Libbey follows suit.

Addressing the packaging issue could be an easy fix, especially since most users seem to receive their glassware intact - unfortunately, the glasses ship in a box with flimsy cardboard separators. Complaints range from chips and broken stems to completely shattered glasses.
Perhaps a little bubble wrap or padding could provide the requisite security during transit.

The second issue is more perplexing because it’s more erratic. Some users report that they received cheaper glasses or thinner than expected glassware. In these cases, the glasses appear to chip easily around the rim and base, and the stems may break with minimal use. When you receive your glasses, it’s important to make sure you received the right product.

Notably, many of the complaints about quality control and packaging note that the customer service response almost makes up for everything. It’s in your best interest to go directly to the source to ensure you get the right product intact.

Wrapping Up

The Libbey Signature Kentfield Estate All-Purpose wine glasses set the table at any special occasion, but they also round out a relaxing evening at home. This American-made wine glass looks classy and enhances the flavor of any drink, including water and cocktails. In short, Libbey created a wine glass that’s the perfect balance of elegance and durability wrapped up at a reasonable price.
