Overall are a classic staple of American workwear. I've been wearing them ever since I was a kid and always have a pair in my wardrobe for messing around in the yard in the fall or other DIY projects.
I came across LC King a few years back looking for a good duck cloth jacket made in the USA and saw that they were making jeans and overalls too, so I decided to give their overalls a shot and review them. Below are my thoughts and review of the LC King Denim High Back Overalls - spoiler alert - I really like them.
About LC King
LC King got started all the way back in 1913 by Landon Clayton King when he noticed a need for tough, durable workwear that could hold its own against a long day on the farm. He started the LC King factory shortly thereafter and it has been a staple of downtown Bristol, Tennessee ever since, run by each generation of the King family.
Jack King runs it today and their line of workwear is pretty vast. Their Heritage series is what I gravitate towards, which has tons to offer:
- Chore coats and barn coats
- Utility jackets
- Western jackets
- Jeans and overalls
- Casual shirts
- Shorts and pants
- Hats and caps
What really stands out about a lot of their products is their thickness and durability - most items are triple stitched and meant to last for a lifetime.
All of their apparel comes in a lot of different styles and colors too, so you can buy quite a few items for your wardrobe that can go with just about anything.
But, in today's review, we're going to focus on their overalls. More specifically, their classic high back indigo denim overalls, which is just one of the varieties they have. In their Heritage series, LC King also has Hickory Stripe, White, Green, Arctic Blue, and Brick Red colors in both high back and low back varieties.
What We Like Best
These LC King high back indigo denim overalls are really comfortable and functional - easily one of the best pairs of overalls I've bought in the last 10 years.
Starting with the durability, toughness is one of the signature characteristics of all LC King workwear and these overalls are no different. They are made from a thick unwashed denim and triple stitched. I've been wearing these overalls for a few months now and put them through several long days in the yard and haven't noticed any blemishes, tears, or other imperfections. I think it's safe to say these overalls will last me a really long time.
I also really like the adjustability of the overalls. The shoulder straps are super easy to adjust even when you already have your overalls clasped and they stay in place once you adjust them. I've had some overalls that slide all over the place and that is definitely not the case here. On each side, you have your classic waist buttons, two on each side to help the overalls get a tighter fit on your torso. I typically just button the bottom button and that is snug enough for me.
One of the major perks of overalls for workwear is the amount of pockets you have to store small tools and other things you need throughout the day. These LC King overalls come with your traditional front and back pockets on either side (just like any other pair of jeans), but also come with a front pocket (shown below) which is really handy and accessible for smaller items. The traditional pockets are also super deep, which I like working outside all day.
Moving on to size, I thought these overalls were pretty true to the size I ordered. Keep in mind, these come unwashed, so throw them through the washer and dryer if they are a little too loose to start (they should be) and they'll shrink to size.
That is also one of the big characteristics to keep in mind with unwashed denim - these overalls will get softer with time. So, don't get too discouraged if they are a little rough on your first couple of wears, they will get better.
What We Don't Like
The only minor gripe I have with these overalls is the bottom of the pant legs are a little wide, which could cause them to get caught in something if you're moving around a lot during the workday. Of course you can just tuck them into your boots if you need to, but I would love a little customization on that part of the overalls fit to better suit myself.
Overall (eh??), these overalls are a really great buy. For the price point, you're getting a great value and a pair of overalls that will likely last you a lifetime. Like I mentioned earlier, these LC King Denim High Back Overalls are incredibly durable, a great fit, easily adjustable, get softer with time, and can flat out get the job done for most use cases. Definitely pick up a pair for yourself if you need a new pair of overalls and they are in your price range, and be sure to check out the other great workwear in the Heritage series from LC King.
