Are Nissan Cars Made in the USA?

Nissans were originally produced in Yokohama, Japan, in 1914, under the Datsun Motor Corporation. Nissan branched out as an independent automotive manufacturer in 1934. Nissan has since gone on to expand its manufacturing to the United States, and in 1989, it brought on the luxury brand Infiniti.

The original Datsun manufacturing site in Japan is now the global headquarters for Nissan and is still open to business and tours today. Nissan is obviously a very recognizable brand and one of the largest car manufacturers in the world. How much have they expanded to the U.S. for production though? We did the research to find out. Our verdict is below.

Verdict: Where are Nissan Made?

The majority of Nissan vehicles are manufactured outside of the United States. By the 1980s, Nissan opened manufacturing plants in the United States to meet increasing demands. Nissan established a plant in Symrna, TN, and later a powertrain plant for its Nissan and Infinity brands in Decherd, TN.

Many of the cars driven in the United States are manufactured in the United States. However, Nissan has manufacturing sites globally, including Europe, Asia, and Japan. In total, Nissan has an annual production capacity of over 1 million vehicles in the U.S.

Below is a breakdown of all their production plants, both domestic and international.

How to Tell Where Your Nissan is Made

Most new and used vehicles come with their original window sticker. This sticker can tell you what features are in your car, its MSRP value, and also its country of origin. If your vehicle does not have a window sticker, you can check its vehicle identification number (VIN). Cars manufactured in the United States have a VIN that begins with the number one. You can typically find your VIN under your hood or on your driver’s side door. Use a free service like to look at other details that are revealed in your VIN as well!
