About

The Alden Shoe Company was established by Charles H. Alden in Middleborough, Massachusetts, in 1884. The shoe industry in Massachusetts was once very active and important. Early shoemaking was done by craftsmen in small cottages, but mechanized stitching and lasting operations led to the rapid growth of the industry. Charles Alden’s factory prospered and expanded, but the Great Depression and the search for lower labor costs led many companies to move away from New England. Alden, however, continued to thrive by focusing on high-quality dress shoes and specialty footwear. They remain the only original New England shoe and bootmaker today.
