If you prefer organic food for your dog, then Tender & True is likely going to appeal to you. It is about the purest example of organic pet food on the market.
About the Product
Tender & True is a new company that is classic middle America - it is independently owned and based in Omaha, Nebraska. Founded in 2014, Tender & True set out to be the leader in certified humanely raised pet food. You have likely heard of the movement "farm to table" that is part of the trend of organic food.
Tender & True strives to produce organic "farm to bowl" pet food. They know they needed great relationships with fisheries and growers so they could get the best ingredients at the best price. Their pet food was the first to be recognized for using zero antibiotics in 2014. In 2015, they entered into a partnership with the Marine Stewardship Council to ensure they only used certified, sustainable fish.
The #1 ingredient is USDA certified organic chicken. If you were getting chicken for yourself from the butcher, you would be getting something similar. The recipe for the chicken and liver dog food has several excellent qualities. It is grain-free, there are no preservatives or added hormones, and it has many vitamins and minerals.
The chicken they use is humanely raised, as evidenced by the Global Animal Partnership certification. You will also find chickpeas, peas, and potatoes in addition to chicken and liver. Customers report that their dogs also love those ingredients.
Let's examine the differences between different organic pet food products in their use of various protein sources. There are natural dog foods out there that purposefully avoid poultry in addition to grain and other additives.
These will be products made primarily of fish, or possibly the liver, as their primary sources of protein. If you are convinced poultry is inherently harmful, you will want to purchase products that identify as poultry-free. For those that aren't sure, the certifications and practices around the chicken that Tender & True includes in their pet food should give pet owners some level of ease.
Their products go through a rigorous process to ensure that what they produce contains organic and sustainable ingredients.
Like other organic pet food, Tender & True doesn't strive to offer an enormous volume of food at the lowest possible price. Pet owners who want purely natural and sustainable food for their pets will be the ones that purchase this product.
A 20-pound bag of Tender & True Organic Chicken and Liver Recipe sells for $74.00 at chewy.com. That compares to about $50 for 20-pound bags of non-organic dog food. It could still be worse - some high-end premium dog food can cost $90 or more for a 20-pound bag. Considering how deliberate Tender & True is about the quality and sustainability of the ingredients in their pet food, $74.00 doesn't seem genuinely outrageous.
What We Like Best
Healthy Extension puts tremendous effort into using high-quality ingredients to produce the best possible product. The focus is on providing food that promotes overall health in your pet, not just on using trendy ingredients. They are very focused on what they use so that your dog will enjoy mealtime and maintain excellent health at the same time.
They state on their website that their products regularly win taste tests, so you can expect your dog's bowl to empty quickly.
The price of this product does not match the high-end brands. A 30-pound bag is around $55.00 at chewy.com. Some premium or high-end dog foods cost well over $100.00 for a 30-pound bag. Healthy Extension provides significant value for a premium product.
What We Don't Like
Yes, you read that right. We don't see any significant concerns with this product. We are very impressed with the lengths Tender & True goes to take organic and sustainability to the highest level and their determination to change the way we view organic pet food.
Even with ingredients being a more top priority than the lowest price, they managed to produce dog food that has a reasonable price without sacrificing any of the core values of "farm to bowl" pet food.
There is plenty to be excited about when it comes to Tender & True Organic Chicken and Liver Recipe dog food. Pet owners who are heavily invested in "farm to table" food for themselves will find the same commitment for their furry friend in the "farm to bowl" commitment in this product. While other pet foods cater to those that find all poultry to be unacceptable, Tender & True appear to be very responsible in their production of chicken-based organic dog food.
It will be exciting to watch Tender & True as they grow and strive to revolutionize the way people feed their dogs. We certainly don't see this level of desire to do things in a whole new way. We recommend this product.
